Christmas is the perfect time to settle down to some good kids crafts: the days are short, the cold discourages playing outside, crafting will keep your kids busy and take away some of their impatience and excitement while they wait for Christmas Day to arrive, and with families and friends visiting your house there is no better time to display some of your children’s talents proudly!
Window angels make a lovely Christmas craft for kids that will help you decorate your cottage windows for the holidays.
You will need: Skin tone card, thread or wool, gold tissue paper, gold pen, tracing paper, gold pipecleaner, felt tip pens and glue stick.
Begin cutting a heart shape from tracing paper for your angel’s wings. Decorate with gold pen. Then cut a triangle from gold tissue paper, glue the triangle onto the tissue paper wings. Cut a circle from skin tone card and glue it to the point of the triangle. Cut strands of wool for the angel’s hair, and glue on. Fold the pipecleaner in half and form a loop in the centre. Twist the ends together and stick to the back of the head to make the halo and finish by drawing on a face. Stick to your window and watch the winter sun shine through making her sparkle!
Shooting Star Christmas Tree Ornament. You will need a small piece of thick paper, felt, or other flexible, easy-to-cut material – one or two colors, scissors, pencil, glue and optionally reinforcements, glitter and markers.
Cut a circle from the paper, felt or other material. Starting at the edge, cut a spiral going to the center of the circle and decorate with glitter or markers. Cut a small star, about 1 or 2 inches wide. Make a tiny hole in the star. The ornament will hang from this hole, so you might want to use reinforcements. Decorate the star with glitter or markers and finally, glue the star to the center of the shooting star.
Felt Snowmen make great decorations for your cottage or holiday gifts. They are simple and quick to make, and you can customize them to coordinate with your cottage décor.
To make one of these creative characters, you will need sheets of paper , pins, several sheets of felt in different colors: white, black, orange, green and blue, five small buttons, black, blue and green embroidery floss, a needle, two tiny twigs or sticks, glue and white polyester stuffing.
To begin, using your paper, cut an outline of the following: snowman’s body in white, hat in black, mittens in blue and carrot nose in orange. Using pins, pin patterns to felt and cut out shapes. Using black embroidery floss, make a face for your snowman. Stitch eyes and a mouth and glue on carrot nose. On body, sew three buttons.
If you would like to make your snowman an ornament, use remaining embroidery floss to make a loop from the top of snowman’s hat for hanging on the tree. Snowman can be customized using various colors of felt for the mittens and hat. You may also choose to add other items, such as a scarf or a vest.
